<HTML>As far as I know each final sub-assembly was painted ivory white or a light green color inside and the 2 tone grey on the outside by the time it was ready to be placed on the barge . Time was very important during the building stage and no sooner was one type XXI ready to go down the slipway the next one was having it\'s sub-assemblies lined up ready to take it\'s place . At this time of the war color matching was very low on the priority list and a boat was lucky to get a full coat of paint ! I have several pictures in my books on the type XXI and in the B/W photos you can see the light/dark grey paint scheme on a finished section , if the section was still being worked on i.e. engines or other machinery needing to be installed etc. the section may be raw steel or in primer .</HTML>
