<HTML>One last word (hopefully) and then I\'m leaving this topic alone. Any time it comes down to discussing Admiral Doenitz, sides are quickly drawn. Opinions range from him being a saint to being a demon, and everything in between. I know former U-boat men who are angry he was denied a funeral with military honors in 1980. Erich Topp told me the Admiral had been a good commander of his submarines, but was also critical of Doenitz that he kept sending U-boats out in the end when of 4 boats, three did not return (his own words paraphrased, with a little more detail).

A generally accepted fact among most serious historians: Doenitz and the U-boats fought a clean war, and were in fact far less political as a whole than any other branch of the German military.

I think the nature of the friendships between former foes today speaks a lot about the conduct of the Battle of the Atlantic.

A lot of what I\'m saying are generalities, but I think they are still true.</HTML>
