Red light inside the boat.

Having watched numerous movies, and playing silent hunter 3 and 4 until my eyeballs fell out, i'm curious about the red light that you get inside the boats after dark, or at action stations. I read somewhere about the human eye being less sensitive to the red light, therefore having it on during the night would preserve the night vision of the captain and crew. Does it have any other uses apart from that?
