Wearing Goggles in \"Das Boot\"

<HTML>Watched Das Boot again last night and was wondering...
In several scenes, the crew is wearing these goggles as they get ready to surface or are already on the bridge. What are these and what did they protect their eyes from. It didn\'t seem it was for water. Was it for some type of debris?
