Thank you. The crew size still seems quite large even by that standard, but I guess it makes sense as far as the coal handling.
I found the actual crew list on Ancestry.com this morning for when she arrived in NY in February. The Lascar seamen were noted as 'East Indian' and were noted as British Nationals. Most of these men had signed on in Calcutta around June 22nd, 1942. Most seemed experienced as well.
It also lists the 8 lucky men who were discharged and the 12 unlucky men who signed on in NY. All the DEMS gunners were simply listed as deck hands.
It does show the ages of the Lascar seamen which is missing from the list on this site so I may forward to Rainer in case he wants to update.
