I'm also interested in the last patrol of this boat.

She's mentioned in Werner's Iron Coffins as being the last boat in line, in the suicidal sortie against the invasion fleet. She was bombed, but survived, and turned back. Then in The U-Boat War, Buchheim says he saw her in Brest afterwards, looking like "a floating junkheap."

She's listed here are having been fitted with a schnorchel in June 1944. I'm assuming we're talking about the home made one?

I'd love to know whose idea it was to patch her back together and sail her to Norway, but that may be unknown and unknowable. Was Lehmann-Willenbrock ordered to take her, or was it his idea in the first place? One of his maxims was"Thrift is a Prussian virtue!" and she WAS a 9th flotilla boat after all.

I read the earlier thread. Anyone have anything else?
