<HTML>Hi Peter,

U-boat emblems were sometimes painted on the conning tower by the crew after the boat left port and only used for the one patrol. They were sometimes also removed before returning to port. Additionally, there was a time in the war when they were not supposed to display any conning tower emblems. As a result, some emblems were detachable and were only displayed in and around port. Some boats may have displayed “temporary” emblems while at sea during this time too.

I have photos of U-boats displaying emblems that are not listed by Högel at all much less for those U-boats.

U-boats operating around Japanese waters used special emblems (and paint schemes) so the Japanese would recognize them as German. Perhaps there were other areas where special emblems had to be displayed as well.

Sorry, but that’s all I can think of at the moment.

Regards,

Ken Dunn
