Type XXVII mini sub designation

Hello, I was wondering why the Type XXVII midget submarine (Hecht or Seehund) was given a numeric designation like a full-size U-boat rather than just a name like other midgets or manned torpedoes. How was it classified? Thanks for any assistance with answers.
