Kreigsmarine uniform buttons with Commanders name

I am looking for information about a young submarine commander of U-172...he was 22 at the time he sailed and was at sea only 22 days when the sub was sunk. Not all men died then, but I am having difficulty finding any more information about him.
His name was Hermann Hoffmann.
