Presentation stein

This is my first post , I am a long time military history enthusiast and collector,my main interests are WW1 and WW2 .
Some time ago I aquired a pewter beer stein which was inscribed `FROM THE CITY OF MUNICH TO U46 WAR CHRISTMAS 1940`, it has a small angel hallmark on the base .
My question is what is the connection between Munich and U46 , did towns `adopt` boats and if so was this common .
I would also like to know if there is anyone who would have a record of this items manufacture (pewter guild) as it has sustained some damage and if possible I would like it repaired to original condition .
