I didn’t found any British freighter torpedoed, in the Atlantic ocean, before 15 JAN 1940, the date of publication of this magazine.
But it was common at the time, to publish this kind of photos of sinking ships (any nationality) and put a caption underneath, which did not necessarily correspond to the truth.
