Hi Kristoff,

From:

Rust, Eric C. U-Boat Commander Oskar Kursch. Anatomy of a Nazi-Era Betrayal and Judicial Murder. Annapolis, MD: Naval Institute Press, 2020. ISBN: 978-168-2475-140. Copyright: Eric C. Rust, 2020. Page 83:

“For the record, no standard orders or procedures governed the presence or placement of Hitler’s likenesses on German warships. Some U-boats carried none; others, such as U-103, kept one in the central control room; the one on U-154 may have originally been a gift of the building shipyard or routinely supplied by the flotilla staff. Kusch later testified that the picture ended up either in his boat’s Zentrale [control room] or in a less conspicuous spot near the officers' wardroom. This was confirmed by his II.W.O. at the time, Lieutenant Arno Funke, who spotted it on the side of a locker pointing away from the mess and restored it to its original location once Kusch had been removed from command.”

His footnotes indicate the source of his information was actual testimony.

That still leaves the question “Was it a standard picture – the same likeness?” though.

Regards,

Ken Dunn
