Folks,

I came across an interesting snippet of information regarding the two subject vessels. From a report by HMS EXE (ADM 199/618) there was an entry that stated,

"At 0312 on September 29th., in position 55° 28'N 20 38'W, spoke S.S. LIFLAND proceeding 072 at 8 knots, She reported she was bound from Sydney to Belfast, had been in convoy SC.101, but lost the convoy in fog on Wednesday, September 23rd and had 15 survivors from the U.S. tanker WILLIAMSBURG on board."

The US tanker WILLIAMSBURG must have been ESSO WILLIAMSBURG, initially attacked on September 23rd, the crew abandoned ship and 15 were given a reprieve on board LIFLAND until it too was sunk on September 29th.

Regards, Mark
