Continuous Certificate of Discharge - Missing at Sea

Hello,

Completely new to this forum but I had been directed here to ask a question. We are researching a relative who was a Radio Officer on the Empire Lancer when it was sunk in August 1944. We have his Continuous Certificate of discharge, stamped in May 1944 on the Empire Lancer and obviously empty as to the discharge of that stint. We have lots of letters to his widow explaining that the ship went down in 8 minutes after the second torpedo, so my question is, how did the Continuous Certificate of Discharge get back to his family. Would it have been on the ship? Would one of the survivors have had it with them? Was it kept somewhere on land? Any help would be gratefully received. Many thanks
