Scuttled uboats

<HTML>Why were almost all the uboats scuttled after the war? Was it because there was so much iron laying around Europe that nobody thought it would be worth saving? I would think they could have scuttled them in shallow water for possible salvage years later. Also, are there any of them lying in fresh water that would make them worth salvaging now for historic purposes.</HTML>
