U-Boats as escort ships for German coastal convoys

Some U-Boats were used as escort ships for German coastal convoys in 1944-45, for example U 299 between 24.01.45 and 15.04.45, U 427 between 04.12.44 and 23.02.45 along Norwegian coast, U 679 between 18.07.44 and 10.09.44 in Eastern Baltic Sea. What reason of such strange using of U-Boats? Whether their AA weapon was updated? Every detail is interesting. Also all U-Boats involved to these duties are interesting.
