<HTML>Hi Rainer
Sorry for delay.
U 676 had two 37-mm and two twin 20-mm.
American and Soviet situations were quite different. A pair Wildcat/Avenger operated usually far in ocean where weren’t any German fighters. So Wildcat used for suppressing of U-Boat’s flak fire only.
During attack of 5 Oct 44 fighters Yak-9 were used as cover Il-2 against FW-190s that were very active and dangerous. So I think Yaks couldn’t diverted for strafing of German ships and were on high altitude for immediate reaction against FW-190s. Some air combats were really that day and I think that missing Yak was shot down by FW-190.
Regards
