Why no tonnage war by Jap subs?

The Gremans waged a very effective war against merchant shipping from America to Great Brittian. Duh...

Why did the Japanese never do likewise in the Pacific?

Seems like the obvious thing for them to have done, to me. The US had to move much-o tonnage into the Pacific theatre to build up & take the offensive. Why not nip it in the bud, and delay US offensive efforts??? We would have been essentially defensiveless on the west coast, just like the east coast in early \'42...

The best I can figure it, it was \'unmanly\' or non- warrior like to their ego and in their culture.

Any other ideas? Any references? I\'d like to read about their thinking, or lack thereof, for this subject...There is something here that I just don\'t see. It\'s too obvious not to have been done!!!
