Das Boot comparison

Well after seeing the director's cut of Das Boot one too many times I figureed I'd give the original version a shot for some new scenes. When I watched the uncut version, however, the subtitles conveyed the same meaning but in a totally different way. The English in the director's cut and the original version are completely different; does anyone know which version is more accurate to a literal translation? Since I'm in the process of learning German I'd just like to know so that I don't get too confused. Thanks!
