Das Boot--making semi-finals.

Can anybody explain to me the meaning of a scene in Das Boot? The scene in question is where the bosun goes to deliver bad news to his men who are in the bunks celebrating over a victory, and he says they've lost 0-5 and there is no way of making the semi-finals to which the crew reacts angrily. I'm assuming that the sports talk is just code language for how well or badly the U-boats on patrol and their units did in attacking convoys, and in this case the bosun means they've just lost 5 of their own U-boats and sank none of the enemy convoy or fighting ships. Am I correct?
