<HTML>Hi Mr. Stapley,
I had a few experiences on one HMCS Swansea during 1944 that closely resembled the aura created for me, by the wonderful acting in "The Cruel Sea", particularly by the late Jack Hawkins, taking nothing from the other fine British actors. Every now and again I grab the video of "The Cruel Sea." and play it again just to rekindle those memories of half a century ago! Some of it still brings a lump to this old throat.
The picture was well done, and lacked "BS!" I tend to agree with some remarks that have been made about Hollywood Hype in the making of 'some' war films. But I guess the Moguls figure that the returns at the box office are the bottom line counting factor and if authenticity has to fall by the wayside, well they're only pandering to a younger set of moviegoers, who won't know the difference.
I wish more like "The Cruel Sea" would be made if only to make old geezers like me realize that those things really happened in my young life and to depict for younger people "just like it was."
Cheers</HTML>
