Well,
A U-boat going out on patrol had about a 1-in-six chance of not returning. No where near the loss rate later in the war.
In late 1941, it was like playing Russian Roulette with a revolver, whereas in 1944 you'd be playing with a MP40 with three rounds removed from the magazine. Eek...
