Why "U-571"

After doing some research on the SS Hertford, which was sunk by U-571 south of Nova Scotia on 29 March 1942, I was curious if anyone knew if there was any particular reason the makers of that dreadful Hollywood movie chose that boat/name. Presumably, as the story was entirely fictional (although perhaps very loosely related to the U-110/U-505 incidents), they could have chosen any U-boat, or made one up using an unallocated number? Just a random number?
