A short time after Das Boot came out in the USA, a humorous tribute to the film appeared just before the bridge that leads to New Jersey Transit's Hoboken tunnels. There is a very old iron tank near the tracks, which someone-- possibly NJT employees-- decorated as a funny little submarine. It has a periscope and a deck gun, constructed out of pipes and various bits of junk, and at one point, there was a mannequin's head complete with white cap, on the "conning tower." "Das Binky" is stencilled on the side. It has proved remarkably durable over the years, as this photo, taken a few days ago, shows.
