John, to come back to your posting am I correct in assuming that you have a copy of Dönitz's memoirs (or access to them)? If he has used the word 'Hutments' that would be quite significant as the Ruhleben Barracks would never have been described as such. Could you take a moment to verify. (and any other mention of his accommodation). I should perhaps clarify something as I have be

Ken, your link has been most helpful, in providing, from a authorititive source, another reference to a 'hutted camp' as being Dönitz's destination in Plön. My main reference has been the memoirs of Walter Ludde-Neurath, Dönitz's adjutant, who refers to the location as 'a couple of huts on a lakeside' and also mentions that 'the well versed signals unit' h

Thanks John, Reason for my interest is that from 1948 to 1959, a boarding school for British Services children was established within the buildings of the former U-boat unit 1.UAA at Ruhleben. I was a pupil there from 1952 to 1957. Former pupils (we're all getting on a bit now!) have a very active website and Dönitz is often discussed. Can anyone pinpoint the exact location that Dönitz moved into at Plön after vacating Berlin in April 1945. Late on 19th, with the Russian advance moving closer, the OKM complex at Bernau was abandoned and a temporary HQ set up in the Western suburb of Berlin-Dahlen. This too was vacated early on 22th April and Dönitz set off for Plön arriving later the same day, the main signals and Naval Intel
