When operation Sealion was in the planning Admiral Dønitz obviously intended to scrape the bottom and use everything he had for the operation, also boats not having gone through complete work-up. In his book Zehn Jahre und Zwanzig Tage Dønitz writes that for Operation Sealion he would put up everything he had regardless of delays in training and the production of new boats. He specifies 44 available boats, having then excluded a number of boats for technical reasons. This coming from the boss himself should there be any reason to doubt the figures mentioned by him?

Was the Metox not an RWR..? If the destroyer didn't use radar it wouldn't be discovered with that.

I should think they had spotted the destroyer before that with their passive sonar.
