I have seen mention that the Versailles Treaty mandated that all surrendered German naval vessels had to eventually be destroyed. What was the reasoning behind that requirement?

Another possibility is that the photo was taken from the periscope of UC-97, the surrendered WW1 U-boat that came to the U.S. to aid in the Victory Bond drive and then did a tour of the Great Lakes. It stopped in Quebec on May 23, 1919.

Simon, Yes, it is good to be bilingual, but unfortunately I am not.
You said your book covers the "fate of the German Submarines." Do you cover only the combat fate of the U-boats? Or do you also discuss the fate of the U-boats that were distributed to the Allies after the war?

I am trying something new while writing a book about the surrendered U-boats that came to America after WW1. I am blogging, or rather Facebook-ing, the experience. By which I mean, I am posting odds and ends of facts and photos gleaned while doing my research. On the chance you might find something interesting, I invite you to visit.

I am looking for ship’s logs, diaries, etc that describe the experience of these U-boats during 1919 when they toured American cities. Any idea where I might look? I have such a log from UB-88.
