Into the Danger Zone, Sea Crossings of the First World War, is now in stock and available on Amazon UK, and will be available on Amazon US in February. Here is a link to the Amazon UK listing: This book has a great deal of information and unpublished or rare accounts relating to U-boats in the first world war, and the harrowing crossings that people made during that time. It is sure

Good points raised in this conversation. Figuring out which U-boats were sunk by aircraft directly is tricky as-is, but figuring out which were sunk after being spotted by aircraft on spotting duty over convoys is a different matter. That is even trickier to determine.

Hi Steve, I don't mean to derail the conversation, but what kind of condition is the Pathfinder in given the explosion of the magazine? Eyewitness descriptions make it sound as if the forward part of the ship disintegrated on the surface. Kind regards, Tad

Hello, I know that Johannes Feldkirchener was awarded an Iron Cross at some point since it is visible in pictures of him with his uniform. Does anyone know off-hand how many crewmembers of the U-17 were awarded Iron Cross First Class in 1914? Thank you in advance.

Thank you for the response. I will have to check and see if NARA has it at all. If anyone has a hard copy and would be willing to copy a couple specific entries, it would be much appreciated. In the meantime I will continue to see if I can track down a copy at one of the archives.

Hello all, This topic may be covered elsewhere, so please forgive me if that is the case. Does anyone know where I might be able to get a copy of the logbook of U-21? I am particularly interested in the entry Otto Hersing relating to the sinking of HMS Pathfinder, as well as a few other items. Any information would be appreciated. Kind regards, Tad

Thank you very much for your kind responses. Both of you helped tremendously. I have a German language version of the book, and didn't realize Sauer wasn't a captain until later in his career. My German is rusty, and I fear lost some of the details in translation. Thank you kindly, DF

Greetings, I am writing in regards to the German language book "Die Höllenmaschine Im U-Boot," which documents the WWI experiences of Captain Herbert Sauer, a U-Boat commander during WWI. I am writing to see whether anyone has any biographical information relating to Captain Sauer. I am interested to hear what happened to him following the publication of his book, and during WWI
