On July 19, 1918 the U.S.S. San Diego was returning to NY harbor for new covoy duty to Europe. However, the light cruiser (13,900 t) was sunk of Long Island. Actually about 80 miles south of Fire Island. The captain later at an inquiry said he saw a torpedo coming towards the port bow. The U-156 was in the vicinity at this time and even had torpedoed a few barges of Orleans Beach, Cape Cod, MA
