Hi,
I’ve just recently acquired a six pounder (Mk III) shell case. On the base of this shell case has been stamped ‘ One of the six fired at German submarine August 20’ then ‘J. Harkness’ and ‘Mediterranean’ with ‘1917’ and finishing with ‘I.W.T.Y.’
I would be very grateful if anyone could enlighten me as to what this alludes to.

Thanks for the reply, like you I thought that might be the case. The reason I asked the question was that in a local antique shop, I found a well made trench/ hunting knife with a blade length of about 3.5"-4" long with wooden handle. This being typical of the type of knives carried by German soldiers during WW1.
On the handle of this knife is stamped 'U67' implyi

Did WW1 U Boat submariners carry trench/hunting knives traditionally like their land based counterparts in the infantry, for example?
