Sorry to say that I wasn't much impressed by the German version : Hitlers Tor zum Atlantik: die deutschen Marinestützpunkte in Frankreich 1940 - 1945. Maybe not my cup of tea - a bit too dry. Best regards Eric-Jan

The first patrol with U-196 became famous even though he sank only two ships of some 12,000 tons. But it was the longest patrol a U-boat or other submarine ever made in wartime. U-196 left Kiel on 13 March, 1943 and reached Bordeaux on 23 October, 1943, 225 days later.

Hi Adam, This great site shows : 9 Oct 1944. U-978 carried out the longest Schnorchel patrol of the war, 68 days from Bergen, Norway on 9 Oct, 1944 to Bergen again on 16 Dec, 1944. This even surpassed the much more famous 66-day submerged run U-977 undertook while en route to Argentina to surrender there in August, 1945. yours friendly Eric-Jan

Gentlemen, The book is a great reading, the only problem is that it isn't that historical at all. There is a small base that is historical correct, but much of it is fiction, actions that didn't happen at all. Horst Bredow once told me to read it as a novel, nothing more nothing less. "there is so much wrong in that book that I don't know where to start and where to end

Thanks Hans-Ulrich. I didn't know exactly when the photo was taken, now I do !!! I like the Iron Cross 1st Class in cloth on his jacket, note that his version was private made. Later one of the engine-room cewmembers made a metal uboatbadge for use on Struckmeier's board-jacket. yours friendly Eric-Jan Bakker
