The nameplate is not true plastic. per se. Don't know the exact name of it, but I do believe this technology was in existence during WWII. My father was in the British Navy during WWII. Some time during the war, his brother (also in the British armed forces - probably the Navy) gave him a trunk / suitcase, allegedly belonged to a crewman aboard a German U-Boat.
