I too am a writer and am currently writing a novel for children based on the idea.

I know what the kids will ask.
If a u-boat attempted to sail up the Thames in 1941, what defences from the English would it have had to get past?
I know nothing about the detail.
Were English ships using detection systems back then? Sorry for my ignorance. I have a hazy recollection of sonar being used in old British war movies.

Morning All
Just humour me.
Would it have been possible for a u-boat to sail up the Thames to Tower bridge?
I am teaching the Second World War to a class of eleven year olds and I was asked the question. The bright kid who asked compared it to the Twin Towers 9/11 attack - ie it was such an outrageous idea that it might have worked.
What would have prevented it?
