I visited the boat many many times (it's not far from where I live). The sheer size, smell and atmosphere of walking through her, always left me in awe. I am currently organising a petition with a good friend of mine, as we feel that it would be an absolute tragedy to chop her up. Hi Terry Although I am pleased that the U-534 has some future, I am very sad to hear that that she will be chopped up! I just wish the new owners would think it through a little more, before they commence with the destruction in the autumn. It just won't be the same visiting a disected U-boat. After a couple of years of uncertainty over the future of the U-534, it has just been emerged that she is to be saved and not scrapped as initially feared. ..but it's not ALL good news for the U-534. The boat is going to be cut into three sections and a viewing platform placed at either end. Tourists will be able to look through a glass screen to see what the boat was like inside! Th

Hi I'm trying to find out some information on a particular Navigational Instrument used on U-boats and I thought this may be a great place to start. The Instrument in question is a Carl Zeiss Jena (blc) Arg-1 Celestial Computer. These were issued late in the War and were used (as the name suggests) to navigate via the night sky.
