Fate |
Sunk on or about 12 November 1944 in the English Channel south-east of Start Point, in position 50.02,7N, 02.01W, by unknown cause. 53 dead (all hands lost). (Axel Niestlé, December 2013). | |||||||||
Loss position |
The wreck of U-1200 was found in 1999 and identified. In absence of a known Allied anti-submarine attack in this position there is presently no plausible explanation for its loss.
Previously recorded fate
- Sunk on 11 November 1944 in the North Atlantic south of Ireland, in position 50.24N, 09.10W, by depth charges from the British corvettes British corvettes HMS Pevensey Castle, HMS Launceston Castle, HMS Portchester Castle and HMS Kenilworth Castle.
Schnorchel-fitted U-boat
This boat was fitted with a Schnorchel underwater-breathing apparatus and sailed equipped with it in October 1944 but it was of course installed prior to that date.
Read more about the Schnorchel and see list of fitted boats.
Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-1200 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
