Fate |
Scuttled at 0340hrs on 8 May 1945 in the North Sea off Sotra island west of Bergen, Norway, after being damaged by depth charges from a British Catalina aircraft (210 Sqn RAF/X) in position 61.32N, 01.53E on 7 May. (uboat.net, March 2002). | |||||||||||
Loss position |
U-320 was officially listed as lost in an air attack on 7 May 1945, but it was in fact only damaged and proceeded to the Sotra island west of Bergen, where the crew scuttled the boat and went ashore. The Germans later told their British interrogators that they had been sunk by the air attack because they feared repercussions, having failed to obey the orders to surrender and also destroyed their U-boat.
Schnorchel-fitted U-boat
This boat was fitted with a Schnorchel underwater-breathing apparatus and sailed equipped with it in May 1945 but it was of course installed prior to that date.
Read more about the Schnorchel and see list of fitted boats.
Men lost from U-boats
Unlike many other U-boats, which during their service lost men due to accidents and various other causes, U-320 did not suffer any casualties (we know of) until the time of her loss.
