History

The 1st ULD was founded in June 1940 as the former Unterseeboots-Schule (U-boat school). Since 1940 the 1st ULD was based in Pillau, but the official seat was in Neustadt. In 1944 the ULD moved back to Hamburg and was disbanded in March 1945.

The 21st Flotilla was attached to the 1st ULD.
