The famous picture of PRIEN coming home after the SCAPA FLOW raid does show the small wintergarden and clearly the 20mm AA gun on the main deck aft of the conning tower. AT THIS TIME she may have had the central duct work ( but I doubt that ) and then was modified later. In WOLFGANG FRANKS book the wintergarden is enlarged and the 20mm gun is now on this conning tower deck, FRANK'S pictures were taken on the patrol before PRIEN was lost so without a doubt the U-47 had, AFTER the SCAPA FLOW raid major refit work done to her. I do not like to compair one boat to the next but the clear pictures of the U-48 ( also a type VII B ) shows that this boat also does not have the duct work AND was made at the same construction yard ( GERMANIA WERFT ,KIEL ). Could such things be particular to a certain construction yard ? , I doubt it and think this duct work was changed during the life of the boats during repair/refit times.
You are 100% right when you say at what time frame of the boat you are talking about as most boats were modified as the war changed.
