Derek:

The Fleet boats used pressure-proof (full submergence) cylindrical
containers in the superstructure forward at the Conning (barrel) Tower.

The Type- VIIC(40), TYPE-VIIC(44) and Type-VIID all had adequate space betweem Frame 71 & 76.

The larger Type XB (8 of them) had more space available for cork-lined pressure-proof containers. I guess that they liked canned goods better.

It still makes me wonder.........
