Remember, the important word here is perishable. Especially at the end of the war, it was hard to get at items stored outside the hull. How would you like to eat something that's been out in the sun for 90 days?
I have seen photos of U-boat crews killing and dressing polar bears. The tenderizing bit sounds like a sea story to me.
