<HTML>There is a nice 126 page book called \"Technikmuseum U-Boot Wilhelm Bauer\" sold on the Wilhelm Bauer which is docked on the banks of the Weser in Bremerhaven next to a shopping center with a large multistory parking. It is a compendium of articles about various U-boat topics including a lot about the XXI written by several authors. The book has no ISBN number so it appears it may only be available \"on board\".
The piece about the salvage and restoration has only a very short comment about the state the U-2540 was in at the time of salvage in June 1957. \"The interior was in remarkably good condition, the valves of the Diesel engines could still be moved and the on board telephone still worked.\" Wilhelm Bauser was recommissioned on Sept. 1, 1960 as an R+D vessel. The batteries and most of the electric system including the main and creep motors were overhauled by the original manufacturers. The biggest alteration was the replacement of the Diesel engines with two 2,000 HP Diesel generating sets (motors by Daimler Benz and generators by BBC).
BTW, the first two U-boats of the new Bundesmarine were \"Hai\" and \"Hecht\", ex-U-2365 and U-2367, both Type-XXIII which were salvaged in 1956 and recommissioned in August and October 1957. The first new U-boats (Type-201 which was basically an improved XXIII) did not show up until 1961 and they went back to being called U-1, U-2, etc.
The new allies could not help the Germans with submarines, assuming they wanted help, since they did not have any small ones. There was a strict size restriction of 350 tons placed on U-boats which was to prevent high seas use. Wilhelm Bauer got a special dispensation which was a rather hot political potato at the time. This restriction was relaxed over the years, for example the limit was raised to 1,000 tons in 1962 and to 1,800 tons in 1973, but not completely removed until 1980. The first real high seas U-boat for the Bundesmarine will be the Type 212 which uses fuel cells to make electricity. These boats will be very quiet since fuel cells, unlike nuclear reactors, make no noise at all.
