Hi Steve,

You're right! All my apologizes! I believed in my firsthand source which was:

Franks, N. (1995),Search, Find and Kill, Grub Street, London, 139.

I double-checked with a more detailed account of this sinking published in the following book:

Hendrie, A. (1995), Canadian Squadrons in Coastal Command, Vanwell Publishing Limited, Ontario, p. 113-114.

I further checked with Axel Niestlé's excellent work; and there I at last got the stand of the research:
You are right: Mc Donnell's attack was directed at U-584 which escaped unharmed; the actual cause for the loss of U-669 is unknown; the boat was outbound on operation "Kiebitz", intended on rescueing Kptltn Heyda who escaped a Canadian POW camp at Baies des Chaleurs, New Brunswick. U-669 was posted as missing in the Bay of Biscay effective 8 September 1943.

Source: Niestlé, A. (1998), German U-boat losses during World War II, Naval Institute Press, note 88, p. 232.
