I am the youngest son of Maurice William Dilks, who was the Wireless operator on Liberator 959 with F/O Charles Wharram as pilot. It is clear from all the evidence I have, which includes my Dad's log-book, that they were attacked by four JU88'sat 16:15 hours on September 2, 1943 when at position 44:00 N, 11:00 W. They had left Gibraltar at 09:30 hours. They eventually ditched and were under the impression they might have downed one of the JU88's. The three survivors (not four) were Dilks, Foss (the second pilot), and Johnstone (a passenger). I would be interested to hear from anyone with an account from the point-of-view of the JU88 crews that attacked the Liberator and/or the German Submarine that surfaced and made contact with the crew of Lib 959 at roughly 18:00 hours on September 2, 1943.
