I've received info from "michel" that the aft torpedo tube mounts on
SURCOUF were trained and fired from within the pesssure hull.
The torpedoes of France's submarines could not reliably depend on gyroscopic controls for presenting the angular paths of their tracks. Instead, they employed triple rotatable mounts which were mechanically turned about in various directions before firing. These operations were not only mechanical operations---they were very complex mechanical operations. In other words, French
submariners were required to aim their torpedo tubes "down the barrel" at the target, (even when it was necessary to fire a fan-shaped spread of torpedoes) rather than being able to alter directions of those torpedoes from where they were pointed when they were initially fired.
SURCOUF never a torpedo in anger or never sunk a ship........
