The \"Londons\" were not old.. built in 1936/37 but had outdated design.
The Coastel Commando had only outdated planes in 1939 and was almost ineffective, until the American built planes (Catalina, B17, Liberators, Hudson)arrived.
They attacked u-boats with 100lb bombs (not depth charges, so they need a direct hit) carried by Avro Ansons (the mainstay of CC) early in the war, until an Anson bombed the British sub HMS Snapper in error and hit directly. The sub suffered suffered four broken lightbulbs and the Ansons were replaced.
