I guess a certain amount of luck plays a part in getting to any point. That \"luck\" is/was a factor is/was just a mathematical probability of \"luck\" seeping into the effort (as it paid off with the U-Boat captures with the Enigma code books intact). But also adding to the previous efforts of the polish maths folks starting the research (much before Herr Hitler even came to power) on the Enigma, BP had in its arsenal people like Alan Turing (The turing machine chappie) who were first rate brains. I am not sure if A. Church (The American logician) worked with Turing at BP, but his presence was crucial in getting the research moving in the right direction. Naturally one went back to the drawing board if the number of rotors changed. What do you think?
