I have found that in May of 1943 there where two u-boats that claim 9 survivors. The first was U-439 which collided with U-659 sinking both. U-439 had 9 crew survivors. Then on 28 May 1943 U-755 was hit by the RAF and it had 9 survivors. I have not found a crew listing for these two boats. Another thought to ponder about the handkerchief...If these men where from the same u-boat and as much detail that they put into the signing and the drawing of this, there was a lot of pride between them and it seems they would have also drawn in their u-boat number. Maybe for security reasons they kept that type of info between them, not wanting the allies to know which boat they where from. The way I understand it is that they where not interrigated by naval intelligence until they arrived at the POW camp. just passing on what I have found so far.
