Hello, VEK,
sorry, but there is a small mistake: Hartenstein had not been a member of the german merchant navy before entering the Reichsmarine in 1928. He was a student in Freiburg/Br. He studied law for one ore two semester an was Fux in a Corps where he also fought a Partie. ;-) I know these facts from an old friend of mine Capt. Hans Engel, who was a very close friend and crew comr. of H. (C28); H was "Trauzeuge" at E. mariage and the godfather of one of Engels sons.
I've seen some scenes of the film (first part) and was very disappointed and soon swiched to another channel. It was in my eyes "Das Boot - poorly reloaded". And the first mistake I've seen was Hartenstein wearing a beard: H. never wear a beard on a mission. He was very strict in this question to himself and to his crew. I don't know any picture showing him or his crew with a beard.
best regards
hwm
