Hoffmann left the Kaiserliche Marine before the war but returned to duty in January 1917, with a seniority date of September 14, 1914 as an Oberleutnant zur See. He was killed while serving as a commander-in-training on U 92, which sank on a mine in the Northern Barrage on September 9, 1918.
