Paint Scheme?

I have a VII-C model. I would like to do it up like the boat in "Das Boot." Unfortunatley, the movie doesn't help much, and the only color the novel ever refers to is "grey." Was she grey? Was she red below the water line? If not, what color? What emblem was painted on her conning tower, if there was one? I understand that the boat in "Das Boot" is fictional, but if anyone could tell me what the paint scheme for a VII-C u-boat patrolling the Alantic during the fall and winter of 1941 would be, I would greatly appreciate it.
